51. Surusurukārakasikkhāpada 51. The training rule on slurping

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. At one time when the Buddha was staying at KosambÄ« in Ghosita’s Monastery,

Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱatarena brāhmaṇena saį¹…ghassa payopānaṁ paį¹iyattaṁ hoti. a brahmin prepared a milk drink for the Sangha.

Bhikkhū surusurukārakaṁ khīraṁ pivanti. The monks slurped while drinking the milk.

AƱƱataro naį¹apubbako bhikkhu evamāha—A monk who was previously an entertainer made a joke of it, saying,

ā€œsabboyaṁ maƱƱe saį¹…gho sÄ«tÄ«katoā€ti. ā€œIt’s as if the whole Sangha is cooled.ā€

Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchā …pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—The monks of few desires complained and criticized him,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma bhikkhu saį¹…ghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ karissatÄ«ā€ti …pe… ā€œHow could a monk joke about the Sangha?ā€ …

ā€œsaccaṁ kira tvaṁ, bhikkhu, saį¹…ghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ akāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs it true, monk, that you did this?ā€

ā€œSaccaṁ, bhagavāā€ti. ā€œIt’s true, sir.ā€

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe… The Buddha rebuked him …

kathaƱhi nāma tvaṁ, moghapurisa, saį¹…ghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ karissasi. ā€œFoolish man, how could you do this?

Netaṁ, moghapurisa, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe… This will affect people’s confidence ā€¦ā€

vigarahitvā …pe… After rebuking him …

dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi—he gave a teaching and addressed the monks:

ā€œna, bhikkhave, buddhaṁ vā dhammaṁ vā saį¹…ghaṁ vā ārabbha davo kātabbo. ā€œMonks, you should not joke about the Buddha, the Teaching, or the Sangha.

Yo kareyya, āpatti dukkaį¹assāā€ti. If you do, you commit an offense of wrong conduct.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ anekapariyāyena vigarahitvā dubbharatāya …pe… After rebuking that monk in many ways, the Buddha spoke in dispraise of being difficult to support …

evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyāthaā€”ā€œAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

ā€œNa surusurukārakaṁ bhuƱjissāmÄ«ti sikkhā karaṇīyāā€ti. ā€˜ā€œI will not slurp while eating,ā€ this is how you should train.ā€™ā€

Na surusurukārakaṁ bhuñjitabbaṁ. One should not slurp while eating.

Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca surusurukārakaṁ bhuñjati, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If a monk, out of disrespect, slurps while eating, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anāpatti—There is no offense:

asaƱcicca …pe… if it is unintentional;

ādikammikassāti. if he is the first offender.

Paṭhamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. The first training rule is finished.
