Paccantasutta In the Borderlands
Atha kho bhagavÄ parittaį¹ nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ ÄropetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the mendicants:
āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, āWhat do you think, mendicants?
katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹āyo vÄyaį¹ mayÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito, ayaį¹ vÄ mahÄpathavÄ«āti? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?ā
āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹āmahÄpathavÄ«; appamattakÄyaį¹ bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito. āSir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny.

āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, appamattakÄ te sattÄ ye majjhimesu janapadesu paccÄjÄyanti; atha kho eteva bahutarÄ sattÄ ye paccantimesu janapadesu paccÄjÄyanti aviƱƱÄtÄresu milakkhesu ā¦peā¦. āIn the same way, the sentient beings reborn in central countries are few, while those reborn in the borderlands, among uneducated foreigners, are many. ā¦ā
