Atha kho bhagavÄ parittaį¹ nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ ÄropetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the mendicants:
āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, āWhat do you think, mendicants?
katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹āyo vÄyaį¹ mayÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito, ayaį¹ vÄ mahÄpathavÄ«āti? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?ā
āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹āmahÄpathavÄ«; appamattakÄyaį¹ bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito. āSir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny.

khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhÄgampi na upeti mahÄpathaviį¹ upanidhÄya bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropitoāti. Compared to the great earth, it doesnāt count, thereās no comparison, itās not worth a fraction.ā
āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, appamattakÄ te sattÄ ye manussesu paccÄjÄyanti; atha kho eteva bahutarÄ sattÄ ye aƱƱatra manussehi paccÄjÄyanti. āIn the same way, the sentient beings reborn as humans are few, while those not reborn as humans are many.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Adiį¹į¹hattÄ, bhikkhave, catunnaį¹ ariyasaccÄnaį¹. Itās because they havenāt seen the four noble truths.
Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?
Dukkhassa ariyasaccassa ā¦peā¦ dukkhanirodhagÄminiyÄ paį¹ipadÄya ariyasaccassa. The noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
