Paṭhamasinerupabbatarājasutta Sineru, King of Mountains (1st)

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sinerussa pabbatarājassa satta muggamattiyo pāsāṇasakkharā upanikkhipeyya. ā€œMendicants, suppose a person was to place down on Sineru, the king of mountains, seven pebbles the size of mung beans.

Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ—yā vā satta muggamattiyo pāsāṇasakkharā upanikkhittā, yo vā sinerupabbatarājāā€ti? Which is more: the seven pebbles the size of mung beans? Or Sineru, the king of mountains?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraṁ, yadidaṁ—sinerupabbatarājā; ā€œSir, Sineru, the king of mountains, is certainly more.

appamattikā satta muggamattiyo pāsāṇasakkharā upanikkhittā. The seven pebbles the size of mung beans are tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upenti, upanidhampi na upenti, kalabhāgampi na upenti sinerupabbatarājānaṁ upanidhāya satta muggamattiyo pāsāṇasakkharā upanikkhittāā€ti. Compared to Sineru, they don’t count, there’s no comparison, they’re not worth a fraction.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diį¹į¹hisampannassa puggalassa abhisametāvino etadeva bahutaraṁ dukkhaṁ yadidaṁ parikkhīṇaṁ pariyādinnaṁ; appamattakaṁ avasiį¹į¹haṁ. ā€œIn the same way, for a person with comprehension, a noble disciple accomplished in view, the suffering that’s over and done with is more, what’s left is tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti, purimaṁ dukkhakkhandhaṁ parikkhīṇaṁ pariyādinnaṁ upanidhāya yadidaṁ sattakkhattuparamatā; Compared to the mass of suffering in the past that’s over and done with, it doesn’t count, there’s no comparison, it’s not worth a fraction, since there are at most seven more lives.

yo ā€˜idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti …pe… ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti. Such a person truly understands about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyoā€ti. That’s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€

Navamaṁ.
