Kūṭāgārasutta A Bungalow

ā€œYo hi, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ā€œMendicants, suppose someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ anabhisamecca …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’tiā€”ā€˜Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’

netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati. That is not possible.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: It’s as if someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaṁ kūṭāgārassa heį¹­į¹­himaṁ gharaṁ akaritvā uparimaṁ gharaṁ āropessāmī’tiā€”ā€˜Before the lower story of a bungalow is built, I will hoist up the upper story.’

netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati; That is not possible.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: In the same way, suppose someone were to say:

ā€˜ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ anabhisamecca …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’tiā€”ā€˜Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyoā€ti. That’s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
