Mahānāmasutta With Mahānāma

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.

Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œKittāvatā nu kho, bhante, upāsako hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, how is a lay follower defined?ā€

ā€œYato kho, mahānāma, buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hotiā€”ā€œMahānāma, when you’ve gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha,

ettāvatā kho, mahānāma, upāsako hotÄ«ā€ti. you’re considered to be a lay follower.ā€

ā€œKittāvatā pana, bhante, upāsako sÄ«lasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how is an ethical lay follower defined?ā€

ā€œYato kho, mahānāma, upāsako pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, surāmerayamajjappamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hotiā€”ā€œWhen a lay follower doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants,

ettāvatā kho, mahānāma, upāsako sÄ«lasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti. they’re considered to be an ethical lay follower.ā€

ā€œKittāvatā pana, bhante, upāsako saddhāsampanno hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how is a faithful lay follower defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, mahānāma, upāsako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiį¹ā€”ā€œIt’s when a lay follower has faith in the Realized One’s awakening:

itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

Ettāvatā kho, mahānāma, upāsako saddhāsampanno hotÄ«ā€ti. Then they’re considered to be a faithful lay follower.ā€

ā€œKittāvatā pana, bhante, upāsako cāgasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how is a generous lay follower defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, mahānāma, upāsako vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgaratoā€”ā€œIt’s when a lay follower lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

ettāvatā kho, mahānāma, upāsako cāgasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti. Then they’re considered to be a generous lay follower.ā€

ā€œKittāvatā pana, bhante, upāsako paƱƱāsampanno hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how is a wise lay follower defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, mahānāma, upāsako paƱƱavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paƱƱāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyÄā€”ā€œIt’s when a lay follower is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

ettāvatā kho, mahānāma, upāsako paƱƱāsampanno hotÄ«ā€ti. Then they’re considered to be a wise lay follower.ā€
