MahÄnÄmasutta With MahÄnÄma
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
Atha kho mahÄnÄmo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄnÄmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then MahÄnÄma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āKittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, upÄsako hotÄ«āti? āSir, how is a lay follower defined?ā
āYato kho, mahÄnÄma, buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹
ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hotiāāMahÄnÄma, when youāve gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹

ettÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako hotÄ«āti. youāre considered to be a lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako sÄ«lasampanno hotÄ«āti? āBut how is an ethical lay follower defined?ā
āYato kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, surÄmerayamajjappamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hotiāāWhen a lay follower doesnāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants,
ettÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako sÄ«lasampanno hotÄ«āti. theyāre considered to be an ethical lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako saddhÄsampanno hotÄ«āti? āBut how is a faithful lay follower defined?ā
āIdha, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako saddho hoti, saddahati tathÄgatassa bodhiį¹āāItās when a lay follower has faith in the Realized Oneās awakening:
itipi so bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti. āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā
EttÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako saddhÄsampanno hotÄ«āti. Then theyāre considered to be a faithful lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako cÄgasampanno hotÄ«āti? āBut how is a generous lay follower defined?ā
āIdha, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako vigatamalamaccherena cetasÄ agÄraį¹ ajjhÄvasati muttacÄgo payatapÄį¹i vossaggarato yÄcayogo dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgaratoāāItās when a lay follower lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.
ettÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako cÄgasampanno hotÄ«āti. Then theyāre considered to be a generous lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako paƱƱÄsampanno hotÄ«āti? āBut how is a wise lay follower defined?ā
āIdha, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako paƱƱavÄ hoti udayatthagÄminiyÄ paƱƱÄya samannÄgato ariyÄya nibbedhikÄya sammÄ dukkhakkhayagÄminiyÄāāItās when a lay follower is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.
