Dutiyasāriputtasutta With Sāriputta (2nd)

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œā€˜sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, sotāpattiyaį¹…gan’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œSāriputta, they speak of a ā€˜factor of stream-entry’.

Katamaṁ nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaį¹…ganā€ti? What is a factor of stream-entry?ā€

ā€œSappurisasaṁsevo hi, bhante, sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, saddhammassavanaṁ sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipatti sotāpattiyaį¹…ganā€ti. ā€œSir, the factors of stream-entry are associating with true persons, listening to the true teaching, rational application of mind, and practicing in line with the teaching.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Sappurisasaṁsevo hi, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, saddhammassavanaṁ sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ, dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipatti sotāpattiyaį¹…gaṁ. For the factors of stream-entry are associating with true persons, listening to the true teaching, rational application of mind, and practicing in line with the teaching.

ā€˜Soto, soto’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati. Sāriputta, they speak of ā€˜the stream’.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, sotoā€ti? What is the stream?ā€

ā€œAyameva hi, bhante, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo soto, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ā€œSir, the stream is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi, sammāsaį¹…kappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājÄ«vo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhÄ«ā€ti. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Ayameva hi, sāriputta, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo soto, seyyathidaṁ—For the stream is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi …pe… sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

ā€˜Sotāpanno, sotāpanno’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati. Sāriputta, they speak of ā€˜a stream-enterer’.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpannoā€ti? What is a stream-enterer?ā€

ā€œYo hi, bhante, iminā ariyena aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikena maggena samannāgato ayaṁ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaį¹…gottoā€ti. ā€œSir, anyone who possesses this noble eightfold path is called a stream-enterer, the venerable of such and such name and clan.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Yo hi, sāriputta, iminā ariyena aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikena maggena samannāgato ayaṁ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaį¹…gottoā€ti. For anyone who possesses this noble eightfold path is called a stream-enterer, the venerable of such and such name and clan.ā€
