Ariį¹­į¹­hasutta With Ariį¹­į¹­ha

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Tatra kho bhagavā …pe… etadavoca: There the Buddha … said:

ā€œbhāvetha no tumhe bhikkhave, ānāpānassatinā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you develop mindfulness of breathing?ā€

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ariṭṭho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Ariṭṭha said to him:

ā€œahaṁ kho, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatinā€ti. ā€œSir, I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, ariį¹­į¹­ha, bhāvesi ānāpānassatinā€ti? ā€œBut mendicant, how do you develop it?ā€

ā€œAtÄ«tesu me, bhante, kāmesu kāmacchando pahÄ«no, anāgatesu me kāmesu kāmacchando vigato, ajjhattabahiddhā ca me dhammesu paį¹­ighasaƱƱā suppaį¹­ivinÄ«tā. ā€œSir, I’ve given up desire for sensual pleasures of the past. I’m rid of desire for sensual pleasures of the future. And I have eliminated perception of repulsion regarding phenomena internally and externally.

So satova assasissāmi, satova passasissāmi. Just mindful, I will breathe in. Mindful, I will breathe out.

Evaṁ khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatinā€ti. That’s how I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā€

ā€œā€˜Atthesā, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati, nesā natthī’ti vadāmi. ā€œThat is mindfulness of breathing, Ariį¹­į¹­ha; I don’t deny it.

Api ca, ariį¹­į¹­ha, yathā ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hoti But as to how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail,

taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā ariį¹­į¹­ho bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Ariį¹­į¹­ha replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKathaƱca, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hoti? ā€œAnd how is mindfulness of breathing fulfilled in detail?

Idha, ariį¹­į¹­ha, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. It’s when a mendicant—gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut—sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

DÄ«ghaṁ vā assasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti …pe… Breathing in heavily they know: ā€˜I’m breathing in heavily.’ Breathing out heavily they know: ā€˜I’m breathing out heavily.’ …

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmī’ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜I’ll breathe in observing letting go.’ They practice like this: ā€˜I’ll breathe out observing letting go.’

Evaṁ kho, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hotÄ«ā€ti. This is how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail.ā€
