SÄlasutta At SÄlÄ
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu viharati sÄlÄya brÄhmaį¹agÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of SÄlÄ.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
āseyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, ye keci tiracchÄnagatÄ pÄį¹Ä, sÄ«ho migarÄjÄ tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati, yadidaį¹āthÄmena javena sÅ«rena; āMendicants, the lion, king of beasts, is said to be the best of animals in terms of strength, speed, and courage.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, ye keci bodhipakkhiyÄ dhammÄ, paƱƱindriyaį¹ tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati, yadidaį¹ābodhÄya. In the same way, the faculty of wisdom is said to be the best of the qualities that lead to awakening in terms of becoming awakened.
Katame ca, bhikkhave, bodhipakkhiyÄ dhammÄ? And what are the qualities that lead to awakening?
Saddhindriyaį¹, bhikkhave, bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taį¹ bodhÄya saį¹vattati; The faculties of faith,
vÄ«riyindriyaį¹ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taį¹ bodhÄya saį¹vattati; energy,
satindriyaį¹ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taį¹ bodhÄya saį¹vattati; mindfulness,
samÄdhindriyaį¹ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taį¹ bodhÄya saį¹vattati; immersion,
paƱƱindriyaį¹ bodhipakkhiyo dhammo, taį¹ bodhÄya saį¹vattati. and wisdom are qualities that lead to awakening, in that they lead to becoming awakened.
