Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œā€˜asekho, asekho’ti, āvuso anuruddha, vuccati. ā€œReverend, they speak of this person called ā€˜an adept’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, asekho hotÄ«ā€ti? How is an adept defined?ā€

ā€œCatunnaṁ kho, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaṁ samattaṁ bhāvitattā asekho hoti. ā€œReverends, an adept is someone who has completely developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ? What four?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
