Bodhāyasutta To Awakening

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and said to him:

ā€œā€˜Bojjhaį¹…gā, bojjhaį¹…gā’ti, bhante, vuccanti. ā€œSir, they speak of the ā€˜awakening factors’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā’ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti? How are the awakening factors defined?ā€

ā€œā€˜Bodhāya saṁvattantī’ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā bojjhaį¹…gāti vuccanti. ā€œMendicant, they’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.

Idha, bhikkhu, satisambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ …pe… A mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

ā€˜Bodhāya saṁvattantī’ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā’ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti. They’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.ā€
