NÄ«varaṇasutta Hindrances

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, nÄ«varaṇāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five hindrances.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

KāmacchandanÄ«varaṇaṁ, byāpādanÄ«varaṇaṁ, thinamiddhanÄ«varaṇaṁ, uddhaccakukkuccanÄ«varaṇaṁ, vicikicchānÄ«varaṇaṁ—The hindrances of sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca nÄ«varaṇāni. These are the five hindrances.

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ nÄ«varaṇānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti. The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five hindrances.ā€
