ā€œSÅ«riyassa, bhikkhave, udayato etaṁ pubbaį¹…gamaṁ etaṁ pubbanimittaṁ, yadidaṁ—aruṇuggaṁ; ā€œMendicants, the dawn is the forerunner and precursor of the sunrise.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno ariyassa aį¹į¹haį¹…gikassa maggassa uppādāya etaṁ pubbaį¹…gamaṁ etaṁ pubbanimittaṁ, yadidaṁ—yonisomanasikārasampadā. In the same way accomplishment in rational application of mind is the forerunner and precursor of the noble eightfold path for a mendicant.

Yonisomanasikārasampannassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaį¹…khaṁ—ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati, ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bahulÄ«karissati. A mendicant accomplished in rational application of mind can expect to develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yonisomanasikārasampanno ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti, ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bahulÄ«karoti? And how does a mendicant accomplished in rational application of mind develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiį¹į¹hiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. It’s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yonisomanasikārasampanno ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti, ariyaṁ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ bahulÄ«karotÄ«ā€ti. That’s how a mendicant accomplished in rational application of mind develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path.ā€
