Uttiyasutta With Uttiya

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho āyasmā uttiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā uttiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Uttiya went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

ā€œidha mayhaṁ, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹­isallÄ«nassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ā€œJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind.

ā€˜paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatā. ā€˜The Buddha has spoken of the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katame nu kho paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatÄā€™ā€ti? What are they?ā€™ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, uttiya. ā€œGood, good, Uttiya!

PaƱcime kho, uttiya, kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā. I have spoken of these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā, Sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

sotaviƱƱeyyā saddā …pe… Sounds known by the ear …

ghānaviƱƱeyyā gandhā …pe… Smells known by the nose …

jivhāviƱƱeyyā rasā …pe… Tastes known by the tongue …

kāyaviƱƱeyyā phoį¹­į¹­habbā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaṁhitā rajanÄ«yā—Touches known by the body, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

ime kho, uttiya, paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā. These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation that I’ve spoken of.

Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabbo. The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katamo ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo? What is the noble eightfold path?

Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiį¹­į¹­hi …pe… sammāsamādhi. It is right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ayaṁ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.ā€

Dasamaṁ.

Micchattavaggo tatiyo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Micchattaṁ akusalaṁ dhammaṁ,

Duve paṭipadāpi ca;

Asappurisena dve kumbho,

Samādhi vedanuttiyenāti.
