Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

ā€œā€˜sekkho, sekkho’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this person called ā€˜a trainee’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekkho hotÄ«ā€ti? How is a trainee defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, sekkhāya sammādiį¹į¹hiyā samannāgato hoti …pe… sekkhena sammāsamādhinā samannāgato hoti. ā€œMendicant, it’s someone who has a trainee’s right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Ettāvatā kho, bhikkhu, sekkho hotÄ«ā€ti. That’s how a trainee is defined.ā€

Tatiyaṁ.
