Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā¦ and said to him:
āāRÄgavinayo dosavinayo mohavinayoāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of āthe removal of greed, hate, and delusionā.
Kissa nu kho etaį¹, bhante, adhivacanaį¹: What is this a term for?ā
ārÄgavinayo dosavinayo mohavinayoāāti?
āNibbÄnadhÄtuyÄ kho etaį¹, bhikkhu, adhivacanaį¹: āMendicant, the removal of greed, hate, and delusion is a term for the element of extinguishment.
ārÄgavinayo dosavinayo mohavinayoāti.
ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo tena vuccatÄ«āti. Itās used to speak of the ending of defilements.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the mendicant said to the Buddha:
āāamataį¹, amatanāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of āfreedom from deathā.
Katamaį¹ nu kho, bhante, amataį¹, katamo amatagÄmimaggoāti? What is freedom from death? And what is the path that leads to freedom from death?ā
āYo kho, bhikkhu, rÄgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayoāāThe ending of greed, hate, and delusion.
idaį¹ vuccati amataį¹. This is called freedom from death.
Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo amatagÄmimaggo, seyyathidaį¹āThe path that leads to freedom from death is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
sammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦peā¦ sammÄsamÄdhÄ«āti. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.ā
