1. Abyākatavagga 1. The Undeclared Points

Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œkiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, atthattāā€ti? ā€œWorthy Gotama, does the self survive?ā€

Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhÄ« ahosi. But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.

ā€œKiṁ pana, bho gotama, natthattāā€ti? ā€œThen does the self not survive?ā€

Dutiyampi kho bhagavā tuṇhÄ« ahosi. But for a second time the Buddha kept silent.

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta got up from his seat and left.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando acirapakkante vacchagotte paribbājake bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: And then, not long after Vacchagotta had left, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha:

ā€œkiṁ nu kho, bhante, bhagavā vacchagottassa paribbājakassa paƱhaṁ puį¹į¹ho na byākāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, why didn’t you answer Vacchagotta’s question?ā€

ā€œAhaƱcānanda, vacchagottassa paribbājakassa ā€˜atthattā’ti puį¹į¹ho samāno ā€˜atthattā’ti byākareyyaṁ, ye te, ānanda, samaṇabrāhmaṇā sassatavādā tesametaṁ saddhiṁ abhavissa. ā€œÄ€nanda, when Vacchagotta asked me whether the self survives, if I had answered that ā€˜the self survives’ I would have been siding with the ascetics and brahmins who are eternalists.

AhaƱcānanda, vacchagottassa paribbājakassa ā€˜natthattā’ti puį¹į¹ho samāno ā€˜natthattā’ti byākareyyaṁ, ye te, ānanda, samaṇabrāhmaṇā ucchedavādā tesametaṁ saddhiṁ abhavissa. When Vacchagotta asked me whether the self does not survive, if I had answered that ā€˜the self does not survive’ I would have been siding with the ascetics and brahmins who are annihilationists.

AhaƱcānanda, vacchagottassa paribbājakassa ā€˜atthattā’ti puį¹į¹ho samāno ā€˜atthattā’ti byākareyyaṁ, api nu me taṁ, ānanda, anulomaṁ abhavissa ñāṇassa uppādāya: When Vacchagotta asked me whether the self survives, if I had answered that ā€˜the self survives’ would that help give rise to the knowledge that

ā€˜sabbe dhammā anattāā€™ā€ti? all things are not-self?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œAhaƱcānanda, vacchagottassa paribbājakassa ā€˜natthattā’ti puį¹į¹ho samāno ā€˜natthattā’ti byākareyyaṁ, sammūḷhassa, ānanda, vacchagottassa paribbājakassa bhiyyo sammohāya abhavissa: ā€œWhen Vacchagotta asked me whether the self does not survive, if I had answered that ā€˜the self does not survive’, Vacchagotta—who is already confused—would have got even more confused, thinking:

ā€˜ahuvā me nÅ«na pubbe attā, so etarahi natthÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€˜It seems that the self that I once had no longer survives.ā€™ā€

Dasamaṁ.
