ā€œKo nu kho, āvuso, hetu, ko paccayo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti? ā€œWhat’s the cause, reverend, what’s the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paṁ kho, āvuso, ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taṁ, rÅ«pasamudayaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taṁ, rÅ«panirodhaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taṁ, rÅ«panirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ ajānato apassato yathābhÅ«taṁ, ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ā€œReverend, not truly knowing and seeing form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation, one thinks ā€˜a realized one still exists after death’ or

ā€˜na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ā€˜A realized one no longer exists after death’ or

ā€˜hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti; ā€˜a realized one both still exists and no longer exists after death’ or

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipissa hoti. ā€˜a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists after death.’

Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, hetu ayaṁ paccayo, yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€
