Paṭhamasāriputtakoṭṭhikasutta With Sāriputta and Koṭṭhita (1st)

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ca sāriputto, āyasmā ca mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko bārāṇasiyaṁ viharanti isipatane migadāye. At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.

Atha kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko sāyanhasamayaṁ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṁ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita came out of retreat, went to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to Sāriputta:

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, does a realized one still exist after death?ā€

ā€œAbyākataṁ kho etaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatā: ā€œReverend, this has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso, na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œWell then, does a realized one no longer exist after death? …

ā€œEtampi kho, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatā:

ā€˜na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso, hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? Does a realized one both exist and not exist after death? …

ā€œAbyākataṁ kho etaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatā:

ā€˜hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? Does a realized one neither exist nor not exist after death?ā€

ā€œEtampi kho, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œā€˜Kiṁ nu kho, āvuso, hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’ti iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno, ā€˜abyākataṁ kho etaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatÄā€”ā€œReverend, when asked these questions, you say that they have not been declared by the Buddha.

Ko nu kho, āvuso, hetu, ko paccayo yenetaṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti? What’s the cause, what’s the reason why they have not been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œHoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇāti kho, āvuso, rÅ«pagatametaṁ. ā€œReverend, ā€˜does a realized one still exist after death?’ is included in form.
