kamitvÄ ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho yodhÄjÄ«vo gÄmaį¹i bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Dustin the warrior chief went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante, pubbakÄnaį¹ ÄcariyapÄcariyÄnaį¹ yodhÄjÄ«vÄnaį¹ bhÄsamÄnÄnaį¹: āSir, I have heard that the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors said:
āyo so yodhÄjÄ«vo saį¹
gÄme ussahati vÄyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vÄyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyÄpÄdenti, so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä parajitÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti. āSuppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā
Idha bhagavÄ kimÄhÄāti? What does the Buddha say about this?ā
āAlaį¹, gÄmaį¹i, tiį¹į¹hatetaį¹; mÄ maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«āti. āEnough, chief, let it be. Donāt ask me that.ā
Dutiyampi kho ā¦peā¦ For a second time ā¦
tatiyampi kho yodhÄjÄ«vo gÄmaį¹i bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: And for a third time the warrior chief said to the Buddha:
āsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante, pubbakÄnaį¹ ÄcariyapÄcariyÄnaį¹ yodhÄjÄ«vÄnaį¹ bhÄsamÄnÄnaį¹: āSir, I have heard that the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors said:
āyo so yodhÄjÄ«vo saį¹
gÄme ussahati vÄyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vÄyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyÄpÄdenti, so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä parajitÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti. āSuppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. āAddhÄ kho tyÄhaį¹, gÄmaį¹i, na labhÄmi: āClearly, chief, Iām not getting through to you when I say:
āalaį¹, gÄmaį¹i, tiį¹į¹hatetaį¹; mÄ maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«āti. āEnough, chief, let it be. Donāt ask me that.ā
Api ca tyÄhaį¹ byÄkarissÄmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.
Yo so, gÄmaį¹i, yodhÄjÄ«vo saį¹
gÄme ussahati vÄyamati, tassa taį¹ cittaį¹ pubbe gahitaį¹ dukkaį¹aį¹ duppaį¹ihitaį¹: When a warrior strives and struggles in battle, their mind is already low, degraded, and misdirected as they think:
āime sattÄ haƱƱantu vÄ bajjhantu vÄ ucchijjantu vÄ vinassantu vÄ mÄ vÄ ahesuį¹ iti vÄāti. āMay these sentient beings be killed, slaughtered, slain, destroyed, or annihilated!ā
Tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vÄyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyÄpÄdenti; His foes kill him and finish him off, and
so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä parajito nÄma nirayo tattha upapajjatÄ«ti. when his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in the hell called āThe Fallenā.
Sace kho panassa evaį¹ diį¹į¹hi hoti: But if you have such a view:
āyo so yodhÄjÄ«vo saį¹
gÄme ussahati vÄyamati tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vÄyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyÄpÄdenti, so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä parajitÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti, sÄssa hoti micchÄdiį¹į¹hi. āSuppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā This is your wrong view.
MicchÄdiį¹į¹hikassa kho panÄhaį¹, gÄmaį¹i, purisapuggalassa dvinnaį¹ gatÄ«naį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ gatiį¹ vadÄmiāAn individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say:
nirayaį¹ vÄ tiracchÄnayoniį¹ vÄāti. hell or the animal realm.ā

āNÄhaį¹, bhante, etaį¹ rodÄmi yaį¹ maį¹ bhagavÄ evamÄha; āSir, Iām not crying because of what the Buddha said.
api cÄhaį¹, bhante, pubbakehi ÄcariyapÄcariyehi yodhÄjÄ«vehi dÄ«gharattaį¹ nikato vaƱcito paluddho: But sir, for a long time Iāve been cheated, tricked, and deceived by the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors, who said:
āyo so yodhÄjÄ«vo saį¹
gÄme ussahati vÄyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vÄyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyÄpÄdenti, so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä parajitÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āāti. āSuppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā
āAbhikkantaį¹, bhante ā¦peā¦ Excellent, sir! Excellent! ā¦
ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
