Gilānadassanasutta Seeing the Sick

Tena kho pana samayena citto gahapati ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Now at that time the householder Citta was sick, suffering, gravely ill.

Atha kho sambahulā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā saį¹…gamma samāgamma cittaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavocuṁ: Then several deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees came together and said to Citta,

ā€œpaṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattÄ«ā€ti. ā€œHouseholder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā€

Evaṁ vutte, citto gahapati tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā etadavoca: When they said this, Citta said to them,

ā€œtampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€ti. ā€œThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€

Evaṁ vutte, cittassa gahapatino mittāmaccā ñātisālohitā cittaṁ gahapatiṁ etadavocuṁ: When he said this, his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin said,

ā€œsatiṁ, ayyaputta, upaį¹­į¹­hapehi, mā vippalapÄ«ā€ti. ā€œBe mindful, master! Don’t babble.ā€

ā€œKiṁ tāhaṁ vadāmi yaṁ maṁ tumhe evaṁ vadetha: ā€œWhat have I said that makes you say that?ā€

ā€˜satiṁ, ayyaputta, upaį¹­į¹­hapehi, mā vippalapÄ«ā€™ā€ti?

ā€œEvaṁ kho tvaṁ, ayyaputta, vadesi: ā€œIt’s because you said:

ā€˜tampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œTathā hi pana maṁ ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā evamāhaṁsu: ā€œOh, well, that’s because the deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees said to me:

ā€˜paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti. ā€˜Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!’

Tāhaṁ evaṁ vadāmi: So I said to them:

ā€˜tampi aniccaṁ …pe… tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œKiṁ pana tā, ayyaputta, ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā atthavasaṁ sampassamānā evamāhaṁsu: ā€œBut what reason do they see for saying that to you?ā€

ā€˜paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattÄ«ā€™ā€ti?

ā€œTāsaṁ kho ārāmadevatānaṁ vanadevatānaṁ rukkhadevatānaṁ osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthānaṁ devatānaṁ evaṁ hoti: ā€œThey think:

ā€˜ayaṁ kho citto gahapati, sÄ«lavā kalyāṇadhammo. ā€˜This householder Citta is ethical, of good character.

Sace paṇidahissati—If he makes a wish to

anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti, ā€˜tassa kho ayaṁ ijjhissati, sÄ«lavato cetopaṇidhi visuddhattā dhammiko dhammikaṁ phalaṁ anupassatī’ti. become a wheel-turning monarch in the future, his heart’s wish will succeed because of the purity of his ethics. And then as a proper, principled king he will provide proper spirit-offerings.’

Imaṁ kho tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiṇavanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā atthavasaṁ sampassamānā evamāhaṁsu: That’s the reason they see for saying to me:

ā€˜paṇidhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaṁ rājā assaṁ cakkavattī’ti. ā€˜Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!’

Tāhaṁ evaṁ vadāmi: So I said to them:

ā€˜tampi aniccaṁ, tampi addhuvaṁ, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œTena hi, ayyaputta, amhepi ovadāhÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThen, master, advise us!ā€

ā€œTasmā hi vo evaṁ sikkhitabbaį¹ā€”ā€œSo you should train like this:

buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the Buddha:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’

Saį¹…ghe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo aƱjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puƱƱakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’

Yaṁ kho pana kiƱci kule deyyadhammaṁ sabbaṁ taṁ appaį¹­ivibhattaṁ bhavissati sÄ«lavantehi kalyāṇadhammehÄ«ti evaƱhi vo sikkhitabbanā€ti. And we will share without reservation all the gifts available to give in our family with those who are ethical and of good character.ā€

Atha kho citto gahapati mittāmacce Ʊātisālohite buddhe ca dhamme ca saį¹…ghe ca cāge ca samādapetvā kālamakāsÄ«ti. Then, after Citta had encouraged his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin in the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹…gha, and generosity, he passed away.

Tassuddānaṁ

Saṁyojanaṁ dve isidattā,

Mahako kāmabhūpi ca;

Godatto ca nigaṇṭho ca,

Acelena gilānadassananti.
