DhammavÄdÄ«paƱhÄsutta Principled Speech
āKe nu kho, Ävuso sÄriputta, loke dhammavÄdino, ke loke suppaį¹ipannÄ, ke loke sugatÄāti? āReverend SÄriputta, who in the world have principled speech? Who in the world practice well? Who are the Holy Ones in the world?ā
āYe kho, Ävuso, rÄgappahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosappahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohappahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, te loke dhammavÄdino. āReverend, those who teach principles for giving up greed, hate, and delusion have principled speech in the world.
Ye kho, Ävuso, rÄgassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, dosassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, mohassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, te loke suppaį¹ipannÄ. Those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well in the world.

kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo, doso pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tÄlÄvatthukato anabhÄvaį¹
kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo, moho pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tÄlÄvatthukato anabhÄvaį¹
kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo, te loke sugatÄāti. Those who have given up greed, hate, and delusionāso theyāre cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the futureāare Holy Ones in the world.ā
āAtthi panÄvuso, maggo atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄyÄāti? āBut, reverend, is there a path and a practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion?ā
āAtthi kho, Ävuso, maggo atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄyÄāti. āThere is, reverend.ā
āKatamo panÄvuso, maggo katamÄ paį¹ipadÄ etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄyÄāti? āWell, what is it?ā
āAyameva kho, Ävuso, ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄya, seyyathidaį¹āāIt is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
sammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦peā¦ sammÄsamÄdhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
Ayaį¹ kho, Ävuso, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹ipadÄ etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄyÄāti. This is the path, this is the practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion.ā
āBhaddako, Ävuso, maggo bhaddikÄ paį¹ipadÄ, etassa rÄgassa dosassa mohassa pahÄnÄya. āThis is a fine path, a fine practice, for giving up greed, hate, and delusion.
AlaƱca panÄvuso sÄriputta, appamÄdÄyÄāti. Just this much is enough to be diligent.ā
