Atthinukhopariyāyasutta Is There a Method?

ā€œAtthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaṁ byākareyya: ā€œMendicants, is there a method—apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation—that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment? That is:

ā€˜khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmÄ«ā€ti? ā€˜I understand: ā€œRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€ā€™ā€

ā€œBhagavaṁmÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā, bhagavaṁnettikā bhagavaṁpaį¹­isaraṇā. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaṁyeva paį¹­ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhave, suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œatthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaṁ byākareyya: ā€œThere is a method—apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation—that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment. That is:

ā€˜ā€œkhīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyÄā€ti pajānāmī’ti. ā€˜I understand: ā€œRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€ā€™

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo, yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya …pe… aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaṁ byākaroti: ā€˜khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānāmī’ti? And what is that method?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paṁ disvā santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, atthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; Take a mendicant who sees a sight with the eye. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I have greed, hate, and delusion in me.’

asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, natthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. When they don’t have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I don’t have greed, hate, and delusion in me.’

Yaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paṁ disvā santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, atthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, natthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. Api nu me, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhāya vā veditabbā, ruciyā vā veditabbā, anussavena vā veditabbā, ākāraparivitakkena vā veditabbā, diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā vā veditabbÄā€ti? Since this is so, are these things understood by faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œNanume, bhikkhave, dhammā paƱƱāya disvā veditabbÄā€ti? ā€œAren’t they understood by seeing them with wisdom?ā€

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œAyaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaṁ byākaroti: ā€œThis is a method—apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation—that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment. That is:

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ …pe… rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, natthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. Furthermore, a mendicant hears a sound … smells an odor … tastes a flavor … feels a touch …

Yaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, atthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, natthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; api nu me, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhāya vā veditabbā, ruciyā vā veditabbā, anussavena vā veditabbā, ākāraparivitakkena vā veditabbā, diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā vā veditabbÄā€ti?

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œNanume, bhikkhave, dhammā paƱƱāya disvā veditabbÄā€ti?

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œAyampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaṁ byākaroti: ā€˜ā€œkhīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyÄā€ti pajānāmī’ti …pe….

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasā dhammaṁ viƱƱāya santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, atthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; knows an idea with the mind. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I have greed, hate, and delusion in me.’

asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohaṁ, natthi me ajjhattaṁ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. When they don’t have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I don’t have greed, hate, and delusion in me.’
