āSace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: āMendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you:
ākimatthiyaį¹, Ävuso, samaį¹e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti? āReverends, whatās the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā
Evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄtha: You should answer them:
ādukkhassa kho, Ävuso, pariƱƱÄya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. āThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.ā
