Paį¹­hamanatumhākasutta It’s Not Yours (1st)

ā€œYaṁ, bhikkhave, na tumhākaṁ, taṁ pajahatha. ā€œMendicants, give up what’s not yours.

Taṁ vo pahīnaṁ hitāya sukhāya bhavissati. Giving it up will be for your welfare and happiness.

KiƱca, bhikkhave, na tumhākaṁ? And what isn’t yours?

Cakkhu, bhikkhave, na tumhākaṁ. The eye isn’t yours: give it up.

Taṁ pajahatha.

Taṁ vo pahīnaṁ hitāya sukhāya bhavissati. Giving it up will be for your welfare and happiness.

Yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na tumhākaṁ. The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact isn’t yours: give it up.

Taṁ pajahatha.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yaṁ imasmiṁ jetavane tiṇakaį¹­į¹­hasākhāpalāsaṁ taṁ jano hareyya vā įøaheyya vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā kareyya, Suppose a person was to carry off the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in this Jeta’s Grove, or burn them, or do what they want with them.

api nu tumhākaṁ evamassa: Would you think:

ā€˜amhe jano harati vā įøahati vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karotÄ«ā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This person is carrying us off, burning us, or doing what they want with us’?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.

ā€œTaṁ kissa hetuā€? Why is that?

ā€œNa hi no etaṁ, bhante, attā vā attaniyaṁ vÄā€ti. Because to us that’s neither self nor belonging to self.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, cakkhu na tumhākaṁ. ā€œIn the same way, the eye isn’t yours: give it up.
