Bāhiyasutta With Bāhiya

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Bāhiya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œTaṁ kiṁ maƱƱasi, bāhiya, ā€œWhat do you think, Bāhiya?

cakkhu niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vāā€ti? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vāā€ti? ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€˜etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œRÅ«pā niccā vā aniccā vāā€ti? ā€œAre sights …

ā€œAniccā, bhanteā€ …pe…

cakkhuviññāṇaṁ …pe… eye consciousness …

cakkhusamphasso …pe… eye contact …

yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vāā€ti? The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact: is that permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vāā€ti? ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€˜etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œEvaṁ passaṁ, bāhiya, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmimpi nibbindati, rÅ«pesupi nibbindati, cakkhuviññāṇepi nibbindati, cakkhusamphassepi nibbindati …pe… ā€œSeeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact. And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact.

yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tasmimpi nibbindati. They grow disillusioned with the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact.

Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹į¹hāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi. And then Venerable Bāhiya approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then Bāhiya, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

Aññataro ca panāyasmā bāhiyo arahataṁ ahosīti. And Venerable Bāhiya became one of the perfected.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
