Dutiyaavijjāpahānasutta Giving Up Ignorance (2nd)

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu …pe… etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, is there one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, mendicant.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut what is that one thing?ā€

ā€œAvijjā kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIgnorance is one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge.ā€

ā€œKathaṁ pana, bhante, jānato, kathaṁ passato avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how does a mendicant know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaṁ hoti: ā€œTake a mendicant who has heard:

ā€˜sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā’ti. ā€˜Nothing is worth insisting on.’

Evañcetaṁ, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaṁ hoti: When a mendicant has heard that

ā€˜sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā’ti. nothing is worth insisting on,

So sabbaṁ dhammaṁ abhijānāti, sabbaṁ dhammaṁ abhiƱƱāya sabbaṁ dhammaṁ parijānāti, sabbaṁ dhammaṁ pariƱƱāya sabbanimittāni aƱƱato passati, cakkhuṁ aƱƱato passati, rÅ«pe … they directly know all things. Directly knowing all things, they completely understand all things. Completely understanding all things, they see all signs as other. They see the eye, sights,

cakkhuviññāṇaṁ … eye consciousness,

cakkhusamphassaṁ … and eye contact as other.

yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aƱƱato passati …pe… And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact as other. …

manaṁ aƱƱato passati, dhamme … They see the mind, ideas,

manoviññāṇaṁ … mind consciousness,

manosamphassaṁ … and mind contact as other.

yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aññato passati. And they also see the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact as other.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, jānato evaṁ passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. That’s how a mendicant knows and sees so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge.ā€
