ā€œSabbupādānapariyādānāya vo, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the principle for depleting all fuel.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sabbupādānapariyādānāya dhammo? And what is the principle for depleting all fuel?

Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

cakkhu niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vÄā€ti? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vÄā€ti? ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ā€œBut if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€˜etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attÄā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?ā€

ā€œNo hetaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œEvaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmimpi nibbindati, rÅ«pesupi nibbindati, cakkhuviññāṇepi nibbindati, cakkhusamphassepi nibbindati. ā€œSeeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact.

Yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tasmimpi nibbindati …pe… And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact.

jivhāyapi nibbindati, rasesupi nibbindati, jivhāviññāṇepi nibbindati, jivhāsamphassepi nibbindati, yampidaṁ jivhāsamphassapaccayā uppajjati …pe… They grow disillusioned with the ear … nose … tongue … body …

manasmimpi nibbindati, dhammesupi nibbindati, manoviññāṇepi nibbindati, manosamphassepi nibbindati. They grow disillusioned with the mind, ideas, mind consciousness, and mind contact.

Yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tasmimpi nibbindati. And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact.

Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti. They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, sabbupādānapariyādānāya dhammoā€ti. This is the principle for depleting all fuel.ā€

Dasamaṁ.

Avijjāvaggo paṭhamo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Avijjā saṁyojanā dve,

āsavena duve vuttā;

Anusayā apare dve,

pariññā dve pariyādinnaṁ;

Vaggo tena pavuccatīti.
