Sītavalāhakasutta Gods of the Cool Clouds

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yenekadā sÄ«taṁ hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why sometimes it becomes cool?ā€

ā€œSanti, bhikkhu, sÄ«tavalāhakā nāma devā. ā€œMendicant, there are what are called gods of the cool clouds.

Tesaṁ yadā evaṁ hoti: Sometimes they think:

ā€˜yannÅ«na mayaṁ sakāya ratiyā vaseyyāmā’ti, tesaṁ taṁ cetopaṇidhimanvāya sÄ«taṁ hoti. ā€˜Why don’t we revel in our own kind of enjoyment?’ Then, in accordance with their wish, it becomes cool.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yenekadā sÄ«taṁ hotÄ«ā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why sometimes it becomes cool.ā€

Tepaññāsamaṁ.
