AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ Änando ā¦peā¦ Venerable Änanda saw Venerable SÄriputta and said to him:
āvippasannÄni kho te, Ävuso sÄriputta, indriyÄni; parisuddho mukhavaį¹į¹o pariyodÄto. āReverend SÄriputta, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright.
KatamenÄyasmÄ sÄriputto ajja vihÄrena vihÄsÄ«āti? What meditation were you practicing today?ā
āIdhÄhaį¹, Ävuso, pÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca vihÄsiį¹ sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedemi; yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. āReverend, with the fading away of rapture, I entered and remained in the third absorption, where I meditated with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, āEquanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, na evaį¹ hoti: But it didnāt occur to me:
āahaį¹ tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmÄ«āti vÄ āahaį¹ tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpannoāti vÄ āahaį¹ tatiyÄ jhÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hitoāti vÄāti. āI am entering the third absorptionā or āI have entered the third absorptionā or āI am emerging from the third absorptionā.ā
TathÄ hi panÄyasmato sÄriputtassa dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahaį¹
kÄramamaį¹
kÄramÄnÄnusayÄ susamÅ«hatÄ. āThat must be because Venerable SÄriputta has long ago totally eradicated I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit.
