Avitakkasutta Without Placing the Mind

AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ Änando ā¦peā¦ Äyasmantaį¹ sÄriputtaį¹ etadavoca: Venerable Änanda saw Venerable SÄriputta and said to him:
āvippasannÄni kho te, Ävuso sÄriputta, indriyÄni; parisuddho mukhavaį¹į¹o pariyodÄto. āReverend SÄriputta, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright.
KatamenÄyasmÄ sÄriputto ajja vihÄrena vihÄsÄ«āti? What meditation were you practicing today?ā
āIdhÄhaį¹, Ävuso, vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. āReverend, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected were stilled, I entered and remained in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, na evaį¹ hoti: But it didnāt occur to me:
āahaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmÄ«āti vÄ āahaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpannoāti vÄ āahaį¹ dutiyÄ jhÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hitoāti vÄāti. āI am entering the second absorptionā or āI have entered the second absorptionā or āI am emerging from the second absorptionā.ā
TathÄ hi panÄyasmato sÄriputtassa dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahaį¹
kÄramamaį¹
kÄramÄnÄnusayÄ susamÅ«hatÄ. āThat must be because Venerable SÄriputta has long ago totally eradicated I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit.
