PariƱƱeyyasutta Should Be Completely Understood

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Āyasmā rādho yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ rādhaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Rādha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œPariƱƱeyye ca, rādha, dhamme desessāmi pariƱƱaƱca pariƱƱātāviṁ puggalaƱca. ā€œRādha, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood.

Taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā rādho bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Rādha replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œkatame ca, rādha, pariƱƱeyyā dhammā? ā€œAnd what things should be completely understood?

RÅ«paṁ kho, rādha, pariƱƱeyyo dhammo, vedanā pariƱƱeyyo dhammo, saƱƱā pariƱƱeyyo dhammo, saį¹…khārā pariƱƱeyyo dhammo, viññāṇaṁ pariƱƱeyyo dhammo. Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

Ime vuccanti, rādha, pariƱƱeyyā dhammā. These are called the things that should be completely understood.

Katamā ca, rādha, pariƱƱā? And what is complete understanding?

Yo kho, rādha, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo—The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.

ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariññā. This is called complete understanding.

Katamo ca, rādha, pariƱƱātāvī puggalo? And what is the person who has completely understood?

ā€˜Arahā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. It should be said: a perfected one,

Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaį¹…gotto—the venerable of such and such name and clan.

ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariƱƱātāvÄ« puggaloā€ti. This is called the person who has completely understood.ā€
