Tatiyakoį¹­į¹­hikasutta With Koį¹­į¹­hita (3rd)

Taññeva nidānaṁ. The same setting.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca: Sāriputta said to Mahākoṭṭhita:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjā’ti, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, vuccati. ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignorance’.

Katamā nu kho, āvuso, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«pasamudayaṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhaṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ nappajānāti. ā€œReverend, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Vedanaṁ nappajānāti …pe… They don’t understand feeling …

viññāṇaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇasamudayaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇanirodhaṁ nappajānāti, viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ nappajānāti. consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to him:

ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjā’ti, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, vuccati. ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledge’.

kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, sutavā ariyasāvako rÅ«paṁ pajānāti, rÅ«pasamudayaṁ pajānāti, rÅ«panirodhaṁ pajānāti, rÅ«panirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ pajānāti. ā€œReverend, it’s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.
