Dutiyakoį¹­į¹­hikasutta With Koį¹­į¹­hita (2nd)

Bārāṇasiyaṁ viharanti isipatane migadāye …pe… At Varanasi.

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjā’ti, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, vuccati. ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignorance’.

Katamā nu kho, āvuso, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«passa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraṇaƱca yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti. ā€œReverend, an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand the origin, the ending, the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form,

Vedanāya …pe… feeling,

saƱƱāya … perception,

saį¹…khārānaṁ … choices,

viññāṇassa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraṇaƱca yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti. and consciousness.

Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākoṭṭhikaṁ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to him:

ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjā’ti, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, vuccati. ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledge’.

ā€œIdhāvuso, sutavā ariyasāvako rÅ«passa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraṇaƱca yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti. ā€œReverend, a learned noble disciple truly understands the origin, the ending, the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form,
