Avijjāsutta Ignorance

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha

ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: and said to him:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignorance’.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«pasamudayaṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhaṁ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ nappajānāti; ā€œMendicant, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

vedanaṁ nappajānāti … They don’t understand feeling …

saį¹…khāre nappajānāti …pe… choices …

viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paį¹­ipadaṁ nappajānāti. consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€
