PariƱƱeyyasutta Should Be Completely Understood

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

ā€œPariƱƱeyye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi pariƱƱaƱca pariƱƱātāviƱca puggalaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood.

Katame ca, bhikkhave, pariƱƱeyyā dhammā? And what things should be completely understood?

Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, pariññeyyo dhammo. Form,

Vedanā …pe… feeling,

saƱƱā … perception,

saį¹…khārā … choices,

viññāṇaṁ pariƱƱeyyo dhammo. and consciousness.

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, pariƱƱeyyā dhammā. These are called the things that should be completely understood.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, pariƱƱā? And what is complete understanding?

Rāgakkhayo, dosakkhayo, mohakkhayo—The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pariññā. This is called complete understanding.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariƱƱātāvī puggalo? And what is the person who has completely understood?

Arahātissa vacanīyaṁ. It should be said: a perfected one,

Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaį¹…gotto—the venerable of such and such name and clan.

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pariƱƱātāvÄ« puggaloā€ti. This is called the person who has completely understood.ā€
