AƱƱatarabhikkhusutta A Mendicant

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaṁ desetu; ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho, appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti.

ā€œYaṁ kho, bhikkhu, anuseti, tena saį¹…khaṁ gacchati; ā€œMendicant, you’re defined by what you have an underlying tendency for.

yaṁ nānuseti, na tena saį¹…khaṁ gacchatÄ«ā€ti. You’re not defined by what you have no underlying tendency for.ā€

ā€œAƱƱātaṁ, bhagavā, aƱƱātaṁ, sugatÄā€ti. ā€œUnderstood, Blessed One! Understood, Holy One!ā€

ā€œYathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how do you see the detailed meaning of my brief statement?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paƱce, bhante, anuseti tena saį¹…khaṁ gacchati. ā€œIf you have an underlying tendency for form, you’re defined by that.

ā€œSādhu sādhu, bhikkhu. ā€œGood, good, mendicant!

Sādhu kho tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāsi. It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.

RÅ«paƱce, bhikkhu, anuseti tena saį¹…khaṁ gacchati. If you have an underlying tendency for form, you’re defined by that.

Imassa kho, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena, bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena attho daį¹­į¹­habboā€ti. This is how to understand the detailed meaning of what I said in brief.ā€

Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi. And then that mendicant approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyÄā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

Aññataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosīti. And that mendicant became one of the perfected.
