ā€œAghaƱca, bhikkhave, desessāmi aghamÅ«laƱca. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you misery and the root of misery.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghaṁ? And what is misery?

RÅ«paṁ, bhikkhave, aghaṁ, vedanā aghaṁ, saƱƱā aghaṁ, saį¹…khārā aghaṁ, viññāṇaṁ aghaṁ. Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are misery.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghaṁ. This is called misery.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghamūlaṁ? And what is the root of misery?

Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā nandÄ«rāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinÄ«; It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is,

Seyyathidaṁ—kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā. craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghamÅ«lanā€ti. This is called the root of misery.ā€
