ā€œPubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ā€œMendicants, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought:

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me:

ā€˜yaṁ kho rÅ«paṁ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ rÅ«passa assādo. ā€˜The pleasure and happiness that arise from form: this is its gratification.

Yaṁ rÅ«paṁ aniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, ayaṁ rÅ«passa ādÄ«navo. That form is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

Yo rÅ«pasmiṁ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ rÅ«passa nissaraṇaṁ. Removing and giving up desire and greed for form: this is its escape.

Yaṁ vedanaṁ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ vedanāya assādo. The pleasure and happiness that arise from feeling …

Yaṁ saį¹…khārā aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā, ayaṁ saį¹…khārānaṁ ādÄ«navo.

Yo saį¹…khāresu chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ saį¹…khārānaṁ nissaraṇaṁ.

Yaṁ viññāṇaṁ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ viññāṇassa assādo. consciousness: this is its gratification.

Yaṁ viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, ayaṁ viññāṇassa ādÄ«navo. That consciousness is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

Yo viññāṇasmiṁ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ viññāṇassa nissaraṇaṁ’. Removing and giving up desire and greed for consciousness: this is its escape.’

YāvakÄ«vaƱcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ evaṁ assādaƱca assādato ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato nissaraṇaƱca nissaraṇato yathābhÅ«taṁ nābbhaƱƱāsiṁ, neva tāvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ā€˜sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ti paccaƱƱāsiṁ. As long as I didn’t truly understand these five grasping aggregates’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

Yato ca khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ evaṁ assādaƱca assādato ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato nissaraṇaƱca nissaraṇato yathābhÅ«taṁ abbhaƱƱāsiṁ; But when I did truly understand these five grasping aggregates’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

athāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddhoti paccaƱƱāsiṁ.

ÑāṇaƱca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi: Knowledge and vision arose in me:

ā€˜akuppā me vimutti; ayamantimā jāti; natthi dāni punabbhavoā€™ā€ti. ā€˜My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.ā€™ā€
