Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Sāvatthiyaṁ … ārāme. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜nirodho nirodho’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of ā€˜cessation’.

Katamesānaṁ kho, bhante, dhammānaṁ nirodho ā€˜nirodho’ti vuccatÄ«ā€ti? The cessation of what things does this refer to?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paṁ kho, ānanda, aniccaṁ saį¹…khataṁ paį¹­iccasamuppannaṁ khayadhammaṁ vayadhammaṁ virāgadhammaṁ nirodhadhammaṁ. ā€œÄ€nanda, form is impermanent, conditioned, dependently originated, liable to end, vanish, fade away, and cease.

Tassa nirodho ā€˜nirodho’ti vuccati. Its cessation is what ā€˜cessation’ refers to.

Tesaṁ nirodho ā€˜nirodho’ti vuccati.

Viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ saį¹…khataṁ paį¹­iccasamuppannaṁ khayadhammaṁ vayadhammaṁ virāgadhammaṁ nirodhadhammaṁ. Consciousness is impermanent, conditioned, dependently originated, liable to end, vanish, fade away, and cease.

Tassa nirodho ā€˜nirodho’ti vuccati. Its cessation is what ā€˜cessation’ refers to.

Imesaṁ kho, ānanda, dhammānaṁ nirodho ā€˜nirodho’ti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. When they speak of ā€˜cessation’, its the cessation of these things that this refers to.ā€
