SahÄyakasutta Companions
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho dve bhikkhÅ« sahÄyakÄ Äyasmato mahÄkappinassa saddhivihÄrino yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su. Then two mendicants who were companions, protĆ©gĆ©s of Venerable MahÄkappina, went to see the Buddha.
AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ te bhikkhÅ« dÅ«ratova Ägacchante. The Buddha saw them coming off in the distance,
DisvÄna bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: and addressed the mendicants:
āpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, ete bhikkhÅ« sahÄyake Ägacchante kappinassa saddhivihÄrinoāti? āMendicants, do you see those monks coming who are companions, protĆ©gĆ©s of Venerable MahÄkappina?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āYes, sir.ā
āEte kho te bhikkhÅ« mahiddhikÄ mahÄnubhÄvÄ. āThose mendicants are very mighty and powerful.
Na ca sÄ samÄpatti sulabharÅ«pÄ, yÄ tehi bhikkhÅ«hi asamÄpannapubbÄ. Itās not easy to find an attainment that they have not already attained.
Yassa catthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti tadanuttaraį¹ brahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharantÄ«āti. And theyāve realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. They live having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
āSahÄyÄvatime bhikkhÅ«, āThese companion mendicants
cirarattaį¹ sametikÄ; have been together for a long time.
Sameti nesaį¹ saddhammo, The true teaching has brought them together,
dhamme buddhappavedite. the teaching proclaimed by the Buddha.
SuvinÄ«tÄ kappinena, Theyāve been well trained by Kappina
dhamme ariyappavedite; in the teaching proclaimed by the Noble One.
DhÄrenti antimaį¹ dehaį¹, They bear their final body,
