VisÄkhasutta With VisÄkha, PaƱcÄliās Son
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ visÄkho paƱcÄlaputto upaį¹į¹hÄnasÄlÄyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti, poriyÄ vÄcÄya vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagalÄya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ pariyÄpannÄya anissitÄya. Now at that time Venerable VisÄkha, PaƱcÄliās son, was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk. His words were polished, clear, articulate, expressing the meaning, comprehensive, and independent.
Atha kho bhagavÄ sÄyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hito yena upaį¹į¹hÄnasÄlÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ paƱƱatte Äsane nisÄ«di. Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat and went to the assembly hall. He sat down on the seat spread out,
Nisajja kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: and addressed the mendicants:
āko nu kho, bhikkhave, upaį¹į¹hÄnasÄlÄyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti poriyÄ vÄcÄya vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagalÄya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ pariyÄpannÄya anissitÄyÄāti? āMendicants, who was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk?ā
āÄyasmÄ, bhante, visÄkho paƱcÄlaputto upaį¹į¹hÄnasÄlÄyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti, poriyÄ vÄcÄya vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagalÄya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ pariyÄpannÄya anissitÄyÄāti. āSir, it was Venerable VisÄkha, PaƱcÄliās son.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ visÄkhaį¹ paƱcÄlaputtaį¹ Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to VisÄkha:
āsÄdhu sÄdhu, visÄkha, āGood, good, VisÄkha!
sÄdhu kho tvaį¹, visÄkha, bhikkhÅ« dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandassesi ā¦peā¦ atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ pariyÄpannÄya anissitÄyÄāti. Itās good that you educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk, with words that are polished, clear, articulate, expressing the meaning, comprehensive, and independent.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
āNÄbhÄsamÄnaį¹ jÄnanti, āThough an astute person is mixed up with fools,
missaį¹ bÄlehi paį¹įøitaį¹; they donāt know unless he speaks.
BhÄsamÄnaƱca jÄnanti, But when he speaks they know,
desentaį¹ amataį¹ padaį¹. heās teaching the state free of death.
BhÄsaye jotaye dhammaį¹, He should speak and illustrate the teaching,
paggaį¹he isinaį¹ dhajaį¹; holding up the banner of the seers.
SubhÄsitadhajÄ isayo, Words well spoken are the seersā banner,
dhammo hi isinaį¹ dhajoāti. for the teaching is the banner of the seers.ā
