1. Opammavagga 1. Similes

Siį¹…gālasutta A Jackal

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati. At Sāvatthī.

ā€œAssuttha no tumhe, bhikkhave, rattiyā paccÅ«sasamayaṁ jarasiį¹…gālassa vassamānassāā€ti? ā€œMendicants, did you hear an old jackal howling at the crack of dawn?ā€

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œEso kho, bhikkhave, jarasiį¹…gālo ukkaį¹‡įøakena nāma rogajātena phuį¹į¹ho. ā€œThat old jackal has the disease called mange.

So yena yena icchati tena tena gacchati; Yet it still goes where it wants,

yattha yattha icchati tattha tattha tiį¹į¹hati; stands where it wants,

yattha yattha icchati tattha tattha nisīdati; sits where it wants,

yattha yattha icchati tattha tattha nipajjati; and lies down where it wants.

sītakopi naṁ vāto upavāyati. And the cool breeze still blows on it.

Sādhu khvassa, bhikkhave, yaṁ idhekacco sakyaputtiyapaṭiñño evarūpampi attabhāvapaṭilābhaṁ paṭisaṁvediyetha. A certain person here who claims to follow the Sakyan would be lucky to experience even such an incarnation.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: So you should train like this:

ā€˜appamattā viharissāmā’ti. ā€˜We will stay diligent.’

EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanā€ti. That’s how you should train.ā€

Ekādasamaṁ.
