Suvaṇṇanikkhasuttādiaį¹­į¹­haka A Gold Ingot, Etc.

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati. At Sāvatthī.

ā€œIdhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi: ā€œMendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of a certain person, I understand:

ā€˜na cāyamāyasmā suvaṇṇanikkhassāpi hetu …pe… ā€˜This venerable would not tell a deliberate lie even for the sake of a gold ingot.’ ā€¦ā€

suvaṇṇanikkhasatassāpi hetu … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of a hundred gold ingots.’ ā€¦ā€

siį¹…gÄ«nikkhassāpi hetu … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of a mountain of gold.’ ā€¦ā€

siį¹…gÄ«nikkhasatassāpi hetu … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of a hundred mountains of gold.’ ā€¦ā€

pathaviyāpi jātarÅ«paparipÅ«rāya hetu … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of the whole earth full of gold.’ ā€¦ā€

āmisakiƱcikkhahetupi … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for any kind of material reward.’ ā€¦ā€

jÄ«vitahetupi … ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of life.’ ā€¦ā€

janapadakalyāṇiyāpi hetu sampajānamusā bhāseyyā’ti. ā€œā€˜ā€¦ for the sake of the finest lady in the land.’

Tamenaṁ passāmi aparena samayena lābhasakkārasilokena abhibhÅ«taṁ pariyādiṇṇacittaṁ sampajānamusā bhāsantaṁ. But some time later I see them tell a deliberate lie because their mind is overcome and overwhelmed by possessions, honor, and popularity.

Evaṁ dāruṇo kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… So brutal are possessions, honor, and popularity. ā€¦ā€

evaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanā€ti.

Dasamaṁ.

Dutiyo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Dve pāti dve suvaṇṇā ca,

Siṅgīhi apare duve;

Pathavī kiñcikkhajīvitaṁ,

Janapadakalyāṇiyā dasāti.
