Paraṁmaraṇasutta The Realized One After Death

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ca mahākassapo āyasmā ca sāriputto bārāṇasiyaṁ viharanti isipatane migadāye. At one time Venerable Mahākassapa and Venerable Sāriputta were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā mahākassapo tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākassapena saddhiṁ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Sāriputta came out of retreat, went to Venerable Mahākassapa, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Mahākassapa:

ā€œkiṁ nu kho, āvuso kassapa, hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œReverend Kassapa, does a realized one still exist after death?ā€

ā€œAbyākataṁ kho etaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatā: ā€œReverend, this has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso, na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œWell then, does a realized one no longer exist after death?ā€

ā€œEvampi kho, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso, hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œWell then, does a realized one both still exist and no longer exist after death?ā€

ā€œAbyākataṁ kho etaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso, neva hoti, na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€œWell then, does a realized one neither still exist nor no longer exist after death?ā€

ā€œEvampi kho, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKasmā cetaṁ, āvuso, abyākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti? ā€œAnd why has this not been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œNa hetaṁ, āvuso, atthasaṁhitaṁ nādibrahmacariyakaṁ na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saṁvattati. ā€œBecause it’s not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesn’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

Tasmā taṁ abyākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti. That’s why it has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€œAtha kiƱcarahāvuso, byākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti? ā€œSo what now has been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œIdaṁ ā€˜dukkhan’ti kho, āvuso, byākataṁ bhagavatā; ā€œā€˜This is suffering’ has been declared by the Buddha.

ayaṁ ā€˜dukkhasamudayo’ti byākataṁ bhagavatā; ā€˜This is the origin of suffering’ …

ayaṁ ā€˜dukkhanirodho’ti byākataṁ bhagavatā; ā€˜This is the cessation of suffering’ …

ayaṁ ā€˜dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā’ti byākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti. ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’ has been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€œKasmā cetaṁ, āvuso, byākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti? ā€œAnd why has this been declared by the Buddha?ā€

ā€œEtaƱhi, āvuso, atthasaṁhitaṁ etaṁ ādibrahmacariyakaṁ etaṁ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati. ā€œBecause it’s beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

Tasmā taṁ byākataṁ bhagavatÄā€ti. That’s why it has been declared by the Buddha.ā€
