Lokāyatikasutta A Cosmologist

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā …pe… Then a brahmin cosmologist went up to the Buddha …

ekamantaṁ nisinno kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Seated to one side he said to the Buddha:

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamatthÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWorthy Gotama, does all exist?ā€

ā€œā€˜Sabbamatthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, jeį¹į¹hametaṁ lokāyataį¹ā€. ā€œā€˜All exists’: this is the oldest cosmology, brahmin.ā€

ā€œKiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ natthÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen does all not exist?ā€

ā€œā€˜Sabbaṁ natthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, dutiyametaṁ lokāyataį¹ā€. ā€œā€˜All does not exist’: this is the second cosmology.

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamekattanā€ti? ā€œWell, is all a unity?ā€

ā€œā€˜Sabbamekattan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, tatiyametaṁ lokāyataį¹ā€. ā€œā€˜All is a unity’: this is the third cosmology.

ā€œKiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ puthuttanā€ti? ā€œThen is all a plurality?ā€

ā€œā€˜Sabbaṁ puthuttan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, catutthametaṁ lokāyataṁ. ā€œā€˜All is a plurality’: this is the fourth cosmology.

Ete te, brāhmaṇa, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathāgato dhammaṁ deseti: Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way:

ā€˜avijjāpaccayā saį¹…khārā; ā€˜Ignorance is a condition for choices.

saį¹…khārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe… Choices are a condition for consciousness. …

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saį¹…khāranirodho; When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease.

saį¹…khāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe… When choices cease, consciousness ceases. …

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotÄ«ā€™ā€ti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.ā€™ā€

Evaṁ vutte, lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin cosmologist said to the Buddha,

ā€œabhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! …

ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€

Aṭṭhamaṁ.
