Sambarimāyāsutta The Sambari Sorcery Magic

Sāvatthiyaṁ …pe… At Sāvatthī. At Sāvatthı̄.

bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:

“bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo ābādhiko ahosi dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. “Once upon a time, mendicants, Vepacitti, lord of titans, was sick, suffering, gravely ill. “Bhikkhus, once in the past Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, was sick, afflicted, gravely ill.

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo yena vepacitti asurindo tenupasaṅkami gilānapucchako. So Sakka went to see him to ask after his illness. Then Sakka, lord of the devas, approached Vepacitti to inquire about his illness.

Addasā kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Vepacitti saw Sakka coming off in the distance, Vepacitti saw Sakka coming in the distance

Disvāna sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: and said to him, and said to him:

‘tikiccha maṁ, devānamindā’ti. ‘Heal me, lord of gods!’ ‘Cure me, lord of the devas.’

‘Vācehi maṁ, vepacitti, sambarimāyan’ti. ‘Teach me, Vepacitti, the Sambari sorcery.’ ‘Teach me, Vepacitti, the Sambari magic.’

‘Na tāvāhaṁ vācemi, yāvāhaṁ, mārisa, asure paṭipucchāmī’ti. ‘I can’t do that, good fellow, until I have consulted with the titans.’ ‘I won't teach it, dear sir, until I have asked the asuras for permission.’

Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo asure paṭipucchi: Then Vepacitti, lord of titans, asked the titans, Then, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, asked the asuras:

‘vācemahaṁ, mārisā, sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ sambarimāyan’ti? ‘Good fellows, may I teach the Sambari sorcery to Sakka, lord of gods?’ ‘May I teach the Sambari magic to Sakka, lord of the devas?’

‘Mā kho tvaṁ, mārisa, vācesi sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ sambarimāyan’ti. ‘Do not, good fellow, teach the Sambari sorcery to Sakka!’ ‘Do not teach him the Sambari magic, dear sir.’

Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: So Vepacitti addressed Sakka in verse: Then, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, addressed Sakka, lord of the devas, in verse:

‘Māyāvī maghavā sakka, ‘O Maghavā, O Sakka, ‘A magician— O Maghavā, Sakka,

devarāja sujampati; king of gods, Sujā’s husband: King of devas, Sujā's husband—

Upeti nirayaṁ ghoraṁ, a sorceror like Sambara falls Goes to the terrible hell,

sambarova sataṁ saman’”ti. into the terrible hell for a full century.’” Like Sambara, for a hundred years.’”
