Chetvāsutta Slain Having Slain

Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane. Near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove. At Sāvatthı̄ in Jeta's Grove.

Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then Sakka, lord of the devas, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed him in verse: Standing to one side, Sakka, lord of the devas, addressed the Blessed One in verse:

“Kiṁsu chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “When what is slain do you sleep at ease? “Having slain what does one sleep soundly?

kiṁsu chetvā na socati; When what is slain is there no sorrow? Having slain what does one not sorrow?

Kissassu ekadhammassa, What is the one thing What is the one thing, O Gotama,

vadhaṁ rocesi gotamā”ti. whose killing you approve?” Whose killing you approve?”

“Kodhaṁ chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “When anger’s slain you sleep at ease. “Having slain anger, one sleeps soundly;

kodhaṁ chetvā na socati; When anger’s slain there is no sorrow. Having slain anger, one does not sorrow;

Kodhassa visamūlassa, Anger has a poisonous root, Of anger, with its poisoned root

madhuraggassa vāsava; and a honey tip, O Vāsava. and honeyed tip, O Vāsava:

Vadhaṁ ariyā pasaṁsanti, The noble ones praise its killing, This is the killing the noble ones praise,

tañhi chetvā na socatī”ti. for when it’s slain there is no sorrow.” For having slain that, one does not sorrow.”
