YajamÄnasutta Sponsoring Sacrifice Bestowing Alms
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at RÄjagaha on Mount Vulture Peak.
Atha kho sakko devÄnamindo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then Sakka, lord of the devas, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side. Standing to one side,
Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho sakko devÄnamindo bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: and addressed him in verse: he addressed the Blessed One in verse:
āYajamÄnÄnaį¹ manussÄnaį¹, āFor humans, those merit-seeking creatures, āFor those people who bestow alms,
puƱƱapekkhÄna pÄį¹inaį¹; who sponsor sacrifices, For living beings in quest of merit,
Karotaį¹ opadhikaį¹ puƱƱaį¹, making worldly merit, Performing merit of the mundane type,
kattha dinnaį¹ mahapphalanāti. where is a gift very fruitful?ā Where does a gift bear great fruit?ā
āCattÄro ca paį¹ipannÄ, āFour practicing the path, āThe four practising the way
cattÄro ca phale į¹hitÄ; and four established in the fruit. And the four established in the fruit:
Esa saį¹
gho ujubhÅ«to, This is the upright Saį¹
gha, This is the Saį¹
gha of upright conduct
paƱƱÄsÄ«lasamÄhito. with wisdom, ethics, and immersion. Endowed with wisdom and virtue.
YajamÄnÄnaį¹ manussÄnaį¹, For humans, those merit-seeking creatures, For those people who bestow alms,
PuƱƱapekkhÄna pÄį¹inaį¹; who sponsor sacrifices, For living beings in quest of merit,
Karotaį¹ opadhikaį¹ puƱƱaį¹, making worldly merit, Performing merit of the mundane type,
Saį¹
ghe dinnaį¹ mahapphalanāti. what is given to the Saį¹
gha is very fruitful.ā A gift to the Saį¹
gha bears great fruit.ā
