SÄvatthiyaį¹. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āBhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, asurÄ deve abhiyaį¹su. āOnce upon a time, mendicants, the titans marched against the gods.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo susÄ«maį¹ devaputtaį¹ Ämantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the godling SusÄ«ma,
āete, tÄta susÄ«ma, asurÄ deve abhiyanti. āDear SusÄ«ma, the titans march against the gods!
Gaccha, tÄta susÄ«ma, asure paccuyyÄhÄ«āti. Go, and march against the titans!ā
āEvaį¹, bhaddantavÄāti kho, bhikkhave, susÄ«mo devaputto sakkassa devÄnamindassa paį¹issutvÄ pamÄdaį¹ ÄpÄdesi. āYes, lord,ā replied SusÄ«ma. But he fell into negligence.
Dutiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo susÄ«maį¹ devaputtaį¹ Ämantesi ā¦peā¦ For a second time ā¦
dutiyampi pamÄdaį¹ ÄpÄdesi.
Tatiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo susÄ«maį¹ devaputtaį¹ Ämantesi ā¦peā¦ For a third time ā¦
tatiyampi pamÄdaį¹ ÄpÄdesi.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo susÄ«maį¹ devaputtaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then Sakka addressed the godling SusÄ«ma in verse:
āAnuį¹į¹hahaį¹ avÄyÄmaį¹, āSusÄ«ma, go to that place
sukhaį¹ yatrÄdhigacchati; where you can achieve happiness
SusÄ«ma tattha gacchÄhi, without working for it or trying hardā
maƱca tattheva pÄpayÄāti. and take me with you!ā
āAlasvassa anuį¹į¹hÄtÄ, āThat a lazy man who does no work,
na ca kiccÄni kÄraye; and doesnāt do his duty,
SabbakÄmasamiddhassa, should fulfill all his desires:
taį¹ me sakka varaį¹ disÄāti. Sakka, render me this boon!ā
āYatthÄlaso anuį¹į¹hÄtÄ, āSusÄ«ma, go to that place
accantaį¹ sukhamedhati; where a lazy man who does no work
SusÄ«ma tattha gacchÄhi, prospers in unending happinessā
maƱca tattheva pÄpayÄāti. and take me with you!ā
āAkammunÄ devaseį¹į¹ha, āO Sakka, first among gods,
sakka vindemu yaį¹ sukhaį¹; that we might find the happiness
Asokaį¹ anupÄyÄsaį¹, thatās sorrowless, unstressed:
taį¹ me sakka varaį¹ disÄāti. Sakka, render me this boon!ā
āSace atthi akammena, āIf there exists anywhere a place
koci kvaci na jīvati; where one can live happily without working,
NibbÄnassa hi so maggo, that surely would be extinguishmentās path!
susÄ«ma tattha gacchÄhi; SusÄ«ma, go to that place
MaƱca tattheva pÄpayÄāti. and take me with you!ā
So hi nÄma, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo sakaį¹ puƱƱaphalaį¹ upajÄ«vamÄno devÄnaį¹ tÄvatiį¹sÄnaį¹ issariyÄdhipaccaį¹ rajjaį¹ kÄrento uį¹į¹hÄnavÄ«riyassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ« bhavissati. Since, mendicants, even that Sakka, lord of godsāwhile living off of the fruit of his good deeds, and ruling as sovereign lord over these gods of the thirty-threeāwill speak in praise of initiative and energy,
Idha kho taį¹, bhikkhave, sobhetha, yaį¹ tumhe evaį¹ svÄkkhÄte dhammavinaye pabbajitÄ samÄnÄ uį¹į¹haheyyÄtha ghaį¹eyyÄtha vÄyameyyÄtha appattassa pattiyÄ, anadhigatassa adhigamÄya, asacchikatassa sacchikiriyÄyÄāti. you can excel at this, for you who have gone forth in such a well explained teaching and training can try hard, strive, and make an effort to attain the unattained, achieve the unachieved, and realize the unrealized.ā
